How to choose among hundreds of hosting companies the one on whose servers the site will fly? There is no absolutely correct guide, because the situation changes almost daily, but you can adhere to some rules so as not to stumble upon outright deception. After all, what is a VPS? It is a virtual server that shares resources with others of the same kind. Website speed depends on many factors and you need to know about them.
When something is wrong
When the site was running on shared hosting, my site worked fine for the readers. Caching was saved with the help of the WP Super Cache plugin – ready-made pages in HTML format were given to visitors; they do not require a powerful processor or tons of RAM to serve them.
But the admin panel significantly slowed down, because dynamic pages were generated slowly. This prevented me from writing new articles. The hosting server was unstable, periodically shutting down the site at a seemingly zero load. SMS messages about the inaccessibility of the site came day and night. The last straw was the loss of a draft of a note about the game No Man’s Sky – the moment of saving coincided with another shutdown. The text was restored, but the unpleasant aftertaste remained.
Hosting can be different
Do you need shared or VPS hosting?
Shared is cheap and primitive: it is enough to scatter site files into folders, connect a database and a site. But the server software is entirely in the hands of the hosting owner. If some kind of Heartbleed vulnerability is found, you need to wait for the reaction of the hosting owners – you will not be able to fix the problem yourself. There can be trouble with resources too … or maybe not. If we get lucky. On good shared sites, even with a traffic of ten thousand people a day, the site can work quite responsively.
VPS (Virtual Private Server) or VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) is a full-fledged virtual server with an operating system and programs. Virtual is called because it works not on real hardware, but in a virtual machine. Which, in turn, is running on real hardware. One physically existing server can host hundreds, thousands of virtual ones, each of which will receive a strictly controlled share of the resources. VPS are suitable for solving a large number of tasks, they can use any services – from websites to proxies. For example, organize your own VPN server to protect your communication channel from eavesdropping by hackers. Or, of course, launch a website, even several. The main disadvantage of VDS is that certain knowledge is needed for everything to work as it should. Resources are not unlimited, you need to manage them correctly.
Sometimes it happens that sites on a shared site work very quickly if the engineers have correctly configured the servers. It all depends solely on the hoster. Therefore, switching to Cheap Windows VPS due to the fact that the site began to slow down and show up with errors due to the increased number of concurrent visitors can turn into disappointment – without optimization, the site can work even slower.
